Disney’s AMERICAN LEGENDS is a compilation of several great legends of America’s past, celebrating stories of great men doing great (and not so great) deeds. The selection of stories is interesting, and each has a definitive place in American (and Disney) history. While the stories may be a bit different from what you were told (if you were told them at all, considering most of the heroes are not what one would call politically correct), all in all, it’s an enjoyable collection that my family watches about once a month.

James Earl Jones ties the collection together with live action narrartion putting an actual historical context to the proceedings. His delivery and tone strike a balance between serious education and tongue-in-cheek understanding.

The first story is JOHN HENRY, directed and lead animated by Mark Henn, the animator who brought Jasmine (from Aladdin) and several other major Disney heroes to life. With narration by the great Alfre Woodard and a stirring rendition of the “John Henry” song by the Sounds of Blackness Choir, the short is first-rate. From the backgrounds intended to give the feel of folk art and quilting, to the rough animation occasionally showing through (the rough lines haven’t been “cleaned up,” showing the power of the animator’s original drawings, and giving it a less “pretty” look), JOHN HENRY is a fantastic short, and the primary reason Disney released the collection in the first place.

JOHNNY APPLESEED (originally from MELODY TIME, a compilation feature released in the early 1950’s) is told and sung by Irish tenor Dennis Day. Some nice animation, including some great stylized moments designed by Disney artist Mary Blair (whose distinctive look inspired most Disney features of the 1950’s), plus the great “The Lord is Good to Me” song, make JOHNNY a nice treat.

PAUL BUNYAN was released as a short in the early 60’s and features the catchy title song sung by the Mellomen. Great bass voice actor Thurl Ravenscroft brings Paul’s booming voice to life, and there are some genuinely humorous bits based on Paul’s exploits in creating some of our most famous natural landmarks (Pike’s Peak, Yellowstone Falls, etc.). Paul is definitely not a hero in this day and age, since his claim to fame is massive deforestation. Oh, for a simpler time.

THE BRAVE ENGINEER is the story of CASEY JONES, who really wasn’t very bright and gained fame for crashing his train into another one. The short itself isn’t very heroic (unlike John Henry, who gives his all to show humanity can best machinery; Paul Bunyan, who helped clear the way for settlement in the West; or Johnny Appleseed, who helped feed hungry settlers), mostly being an excuse to have Jerry Collona (the voice of the March Hare in Disney’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND) to do a myriad of voices, bad puns, and the like. It’s quite entertaining in itself, but not at the level of the rest of the shorts.

There are several reviews here who take umbrage with factual problems, but they appear to be getting their tall tales mixed up (it was Joe Magarac who melted himself into steel, NOT John Henry), and those who view the release as bit of shrewd marketing by Disney miss the point that Disney had planned to release JOHN HENRY with other heroic shorts long before the events of 9/11.

While it is somewhat lacking at the end, and could have used PECOS BILL (from MAKE MINE MUSIC, narrated by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers) to make a really smashig conclusion, on the whole, the collection is excellent, and quite enjoyable.

This is a wonderful way for children to learn about American historical figures. My 3 year old son was continually entertained by the songs and different animation. It is a must have on our Disney list.

Kinda like a strange variation of REPULSION if re-written by Charles Manson. THE WITCH WHO CAME FROM THE SEA is about a troubled woman named Molly who had a horrible childhood thanks to her dad raping her nonstop. Now as a heavy drinkin’, pill poppin’ adult Molly has a few problems of her own. The visions of mutilated corpses and the commercials telling her to kill are pretty serious, but that’s nothing compared to her habit of hacking off men’s dongs with a razor!

You’d think with a storyline like that that things would escalate until finally the film explodes into an orgy of blood, nudity and gore. Well, that’s at least what I was hoping for. Sadly things actually slow down as the movie goes on until finally at the end I was getting pretty depressed.

If you’re looking a film about female madness then stick with REPULSION, but if you want some psychotic sexy violence that’s gonna make your eyes pop out then watch A CHINESE TORTURE CHAMBER STORY 1 & 2.

The poster art for “The Witch Who Came from the Sea”–which is reproduced in gorgeous color, but frustratingly cropped form, on the cover of the DVD–has absolutely nothing to do with the movie itself. “Witch” is not a horror film, but rather a scathing indictment of child sexual abuse which occasionally veers into horror-like territory.

Millie Perkins plays Molly, a spacy barmaid who idolizes men on TV, dotes on her two young nephews, and often recalls her late, seafaring father with unnatural reverence. She also has ugly castration fantasies that she acts upon about fifteen minutes into the film(don’t worry, I’m not giving away the movie’s major revelation here). Perkins is really good in this role, and Lonny Chapman also gives a fine performance as her grizzled boyfriend.

What else works in this film? The dreary, battered Venice Beach and Santa Monica location shots. The creepy soundtrack. Molly’s sad, uncomfortable, frightening flashbacks to childhood. What DOESN’T work is the dialogue. Robert Thom(Perkins’ husband at the time) wrote in the Ernest Hemingway-Rod Serling style; everyone in the film speaks exactly the same way, and they all sound so nutty that you’ll often be left scratching your head in frustration. I think that Thom was going for a folksy, man-and-woman-on-the-street feel(for 1976), but the language comes off as goofy and stilted. That said, watch the film anyway–it really is worth it. You’ll never, ever forget “Witch”. (Without giving anything away, the final scene is wonderful, almost perfect.)

Extras include commentary by Perkins, director Matt Cimber, and cinematographer Dean Cundey; interviews with the same; and trailers for some other movies. What’s really interesting about the film itself is that there are two or three scenes which I never saw on the ancient VHS print I used to rent. Brace yourself before you see this; obviously the film is not suitable for children, but many adults will find it extraordinarily unpleasant as well.

This 1954 film was written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz who sure does know how to make movies. In one of the very first scenes, Ava Gardner is dancing in a nightclub in Spain. We know she’s great even though the camera isn’t on her for one minute. All we do is hear the music and watch the faces of the people watching her. By the time we do see her, she’s already in her dressing room. She’s absolutely gorgeous and lights up every scene she’s in. We see her character’s rise to movie stardom and share the unfulfilled life she leads. And then, just when we think she’s finally found happiness, tragedy strikes. It’s a modern day classic drama with a story that pulled me right in.

Humphrey Bogart plays a movie director who befriends this “barefoot Contessa”, nicknamed that because she was once so poor that she didn’t have shoes. She prefers going barefoot and this theme is emphasized all the time, showing her barefoot whenever possible. Rossano Brazzi, who doesn’t appear till late in the film, is cast as the true romance in her life. All of these actors do a good job, but I was particularly impressed with the performance of Edmund O’Brien, cast as a public relations man for a studio executive. It’s a small part but I just kept thinking how good he was. Later I discovered that he won an Academy Award for this role.

It’s the screenplay that moves the action. It never lagged and I sat there with my eyes glued to the screen wondering what would happen next. Considering that this is basically just a love story, that’s saying a lot. I totally enjoyed the viewing experience. It’s too bad though, that there were no features included on the DVD. It would have been nice to have a little more background. “The Barefoot Contessa” gets a high recommendation from me just because I enjoyed it so much.

Yes, this is a much more mature movie than most are used to these days and the story takes a bit longer to gain momentum.

The characters actually have depth and they can act! How refreshing. While watching I found myself just intrigued with Ava Gardner and think she is perhaps one of the most beautiful women ever to grace the earth. The dialogue is simply deliciously revealing as the characters speak from their hearts.

Ava plays the Barefoot Contessa, Maria Vargas who is discovered in Madrid. I expected there to be much more dancing in this movie, being it was about a dancer. However, there is just really one scene of her dancing out in the open with her gypsy friends where she sees the man she falls madly in love with. He is a nobleman and can provide everything for her. She sees him as the man who has seen more in her than any man ever has before.

The scenes where Ava and Bogart converse are the most meaningful. Bogart has a way of bringing out Maria’s natural curiosity. When anyone tells her “no” she says “yes.” She is determined to be owned by no one and yet, everyone seems to want to own her. She fears being exposed and unprotected. Emotionally, she is still a child in many ways and believes in fairy tales. The harsh realities of loving someone and not receiving it in return seem foreign to her.

The first scene is in a graveyard and from here, the scenes flash back to the past in a continuous fashion throughout with narration. Each part of the story is revealed at just the right moment.

The rest of the movie seems to deal more with her career and love interests. The theme of Cinderella and “shoes” plays out well and is very significant in many ways. I thought that even though it wasn’t really mentioned, when Maria says she didn’t forget her shoes in one scene and Bogart picks them up for her, this symbolizes her complete trust in him. Watch for the significance of the shoes in one of the last scenes as well.

The prince in this story loves Cinderella, there is just something he can never give her. While Maria says she needs someone to love her and make her feel safe, she wants the entire “Prince” package. What she finds is someone who doesn’t love her enough at first, to tell her he can’t make her completely happy.

“Tru Calling” was a television show that ran for 1 season on Fox before being abruptly canceled prior to the airing of the first six completed episodes of what was shaping up to be a phenomenal second season. Well, at least it fared better than Firefly. Sorry, it still hurts. The show starred girl-of-my-dreams Eliza Dushku (of Buffy/Angel fame) as a morgue attendant, Tru Davies, who gains a unique supernatural power. The dead bodies she attends occasionally ask her for help and she finds herself instantly transported back to the moment she awoke that morning and charged with saving the life of the corpse she just encountered. It’s a simple set-up for what proves to be a formulaic but very entertaining show that deserved much better than it got.

Honestly, Eliza Dushku herself is reason enough to go out and buy this. The girl is just a joy to watch onscreen. She has girl-next-door likability, great acting talent, plenty of attitude, and a damn sexy voice. Also: quite pretty, yes? But the writing for “Tru Calling” is also top-notch and manages to keep things interesting at all times in spite of the episodic nature of the stories. You’ll be surprised at how inventive and compelling some of the stories are. One finds Tru reliving the same day four separate times as every night after saving the life, another corpse turns up as a result and sends her back to the start. Others have her juggling her duty with finagling her ne’er-do-well of a brother out of whatever idiotic situation he’s gotten himself into or attempting to save people close to her. Yet another has her charged with saving two lives on the same day, a monumental task considering the amount of investigation, resourcefulness, and work it takes to save the life of one person you don’t know anything about aside from cause of death. The supporting cast is also outstanding including Tru’s boss (a The Lord of the Rings nerd), and her exceptionally dysfunctional family. Just how dysfunctional? I couldn’t possibly tell you without massive spoilers.

The real story for the show begins when Tru finds out that she has an opposite. Jason Priestly takes the show by storm as Jack, a man whose day rewinds every time our heroine’s does and is charged with making sure those on a collision course with death stay that way. Tru is then forced to examine her place in the world and wonder if she is, as Jack says, doing more harm than good by disrupting the natural order of things. The come the bombshells. The last part of Season 1 gathers massive momentum that carries over into Season 2 and you curse Fox’s stupidity for killing yet another great show at it’s creative peak when the last episode is done and you’re left pondering what could have been.

“Tru Calling” was an outstanding series for fans of supernatural television and I’m still ticked off that it’s gone. Instead we got endless “reality” shows -each more inane and derivative than the last-, more and more formulaic crime and medical dramas (House, M.D. rocks, though), and fluff like “Medium” and “Ghost Whisperer” (no links for you!). And when we do get real deal supernatural television it’s on-the-bubble shows like Reaper that are great and so you fear every week of hearing about their cancellation. This is no kind of life for a fan to live, man! Speak up about your favorite shows when those rumors start swirling. One email to the network can be a drop in an ocean of support that saves the shows you love. Check “Tru Calling” out if the notion of a macabre, heroic version of Groundhog Day starring Miss Dushku appeals to you in any way.

4 1/2 stars rounded up for old times sake.

I never seen this show while it ran for a little over a season, but I caught a glimpse of a re-run and fell in love with it. I ordered the complete series on DVD here off of Amazon. I started watching the series, and could not get enough of it. The characters all blended well, and I have NO idea why this show was canceled. It should have ran for many more years. Eliza Dushku as Tru did an amazing heart felt job in every episode. I don’t think a better actress could be found for this part. Jason Priestley as Jack was simply amazing. I found myself agreeing with the character “Jack” in his outlook on what he did to preserve the laws of fate.

Shawn Reaves as Harrison, the half bad boy good guy of the show made for an entertaining watch. Shawn Reaves as Davis was outstanding in his performance, I always thought he had a “thing” for Tru, and I can’t blame him. I enjoyed the whole premise of this show. All in all a great show, and worth watching.

MGM released a DVD edition of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” in the late 1990s, but it had few extras, a mono soundtrack, and a scratched print. Finally, MGM has given Sergio Leone’s Western epic the double-disc special edition it deserves. The print is restored and as clear as I’ve ever seen it, the sound is now an astonishing 5.1 Surround (listen to the glass falling off Tuco after he springs through the window in the opening sequence!) nineteen minutes of footage from the Italian original have been restored, and the discs are packed with extras. Even the packaging is great: a sturdy interlocking box, with the DVDs kept in the upper and bottom parts of the two lids. Also inside the box are cards containing posters for the film in five different countries.

The film, like most of the European Westerns of the 1960s, was critically disregarded in its day. The New York Times said of it: “the most expensive, pious, and repellent movie in the history of its peculiar genre. There is scarcely a moment’s respite from the pain.” It’s amazing how people missed the brilliance of this movie, which turned Western conventions upside down in such a wonderfully bizarre, European way. Now the film is considered a classic, and only Sergio Leone’s own “Once Upon a Time in the West” (another great 2 DVD set, by the way) has more respect in the genre. Leone’s strange style — stretched out time, obsession with close-ups and extreme wide-shots, focus on rituals, and use of Morricone’s wild and avant-garde score — are all in full force in this tale of three treasure-seekers searching for a cache of gold coins on the Texas-New Mexico border during the Civil War. The implacable and unflappable ‘hero’ Blondie (Clint Eastwood), the crazy comic bandit Tuco (Eli Wallach), and the calculating immoral sadist Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef) cross each other’s paths amidst the senseless violence of the war. Leone perfectly contrasts the self-interested men with the greater backdrop of the tragedy of war. It’s a strangely emotionally affecting picture despite its focus on three men who are detached from normal society and seem not to care about anything but money. So many individual scenes stand out for their virtuosity that the movie a parade of “greatest hits.” Most astonishing of all is “The Ecstasy of Gold” sequence where Tuco dashes madly through a cemetery, looking for the grave that might hold the gold. Morricone’s music here is especially overwhelming.

Chances are you’ve seen the film and love it. What about the new scenes and the extras?

Nineteen minutes of footage have been restored that were never shown in the American prints. The scenes integrate perfectly into the film, and after seeing them once, you won’t be able to imagine they were ever missing. Among the scenes are Angel Eyes visiting a destroyed fort; Tuco hiring bandits to help him chase Blondie; Blondie and Angel Eyes having a face-to-face when they first set out together to find the gold; and some extra conversation between Tuco and Blondie in the desert. However, these scenes were never dubbed into English in the 1960s. Therefore, the DVD producers had to newly dub them. Eli Wallach and Clint Eastwood do their own voices. An actor named Simon Prescott does the imitation of the deceased Lee Van Cleef. Admittedly, Wallach and Eastwood no longer sound the same, but I couldn’t imagine someone else imitating their voices — it couldn’t have been done any other way. Prescott is pretty good as Angel Eyes, if a bit more gravelly.

The extras…

Disc 1 has audio commentary by Richard Shickel, a film historian who wrote Eastwood’s biography and also did commentary on Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America” DVD. His comments can be pretty dry, and he focuses mostly on Leone’s style and techniques instead of on background information on the filming itself. Nonetheless, there are many interesting insights, and Shickel manages to say a lot during the three-hour running time.

Most of the extras are on Disc 2:

“Leone’s West” — A 20-minute documentary about the making of the film. Includes interviews with Shickel, producer Alberto Grimaldi, author of the English dialogue Mickey Knox, and best of all, Eastwood and Wallach. There’s some very interesting info and memories here, mostly from Knox and the two actors.

“The Leone Style” — A 23-minute documentary, really just an extension of the first one. It spends more time on Leone’s unusual techniques. The same interviewees appear here.

“The Man Who Lost the Civil War” — A 14-minute documentary that was produced separately from the DVD. It makes no mention of the movie, but is about its historical backdrop: the disastrous General Sibley campaign in Texas. Sibley appears in the film briefly, and this short documentary gives the viewer an important insight into the world of Blondie, Tuco, and Angel Eyes.

“Reconstructing The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” — An 11 minute look into the painstaking work involved with fixing the picture and sound, restoring the cut scenes, and re-dubbing it.

“Il Maestro: Ennio Morricone” — 8 minutes; mostly an interview with music scholar John Burlingame about the film’s score. At the end of the feature, you can choose to listen to an audio-only twelve-minute lecture by Burlingame that provides a much more in-depth analysis of the music.

“Deleted Scenes” — Two scenes couldn’t go back into the film. The extended torture scene had a damaged negative, so here it is in its rougher state. An apparently lost scene is reconstructed through text, stills, and clips from the French trailer.

Finally, there’s a gallery of posters, the original trailer, and MGM tossing in some gratuitous advertising for their other films.

Don’t miss this DVD. Not only is it one of the great action films and one the great westerns, but it’s the kind of release that the DVD format was invented for!

“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” is Sergio Leone’s epic masterpiece. While it is part of his Spaghetti Western Trilogy( all three films have different characters and plots), the film stands on its own and really shows you how good a movie can really be. This movie has it all. It has action, drama and even some comic relief in it. It is a timeless classic that is unforgettable. When I first saw it, I was a little kid and couldn’t truly appreciate it as I can now at age 22.

Blondie (The Man with No Name) isn’t your typical good guy. He mainly does things that suits his own agenda. However, when compared to the murderous Angel Eyes and the greedy Tuco, Blondie is a saint. This tale involves bloodshed, shoot-outs, search for treasure, and double-crossing. And it all takes place while the Civil War is going on, which makes things a lot more “interesting” for the notorious three. The West has never been wilder or more unpredictable than it is now. With an incredible score, excellent acting, and superb story-telling, this is one memorable film that you will never forget.

As I said in the beginning, the first time I saw this was when I was a little kid. When I just recently purchased this new edition of the movie, it truly was like I was watching it for the first time. Coming from a guy who isn’t a big fan of Westerns (I don’t mind them, but I don’t watch too many of them), I absolutely LOVED this film. In fact, I wanted to give it a standing ovation when it was all said and done due to how moved I was by it. This really is filmmaking at its finest. I wasn’t terribly impressed with Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America,” but he is absolutely flawless with this amazing and timeless Western. It is slower than the second film (”For a Few Dollars More”), but I think that makes this all the better. The build up of tension is much more present in this film, and you really get the sense that these characters are real people. Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach are brilliant in their roles, and a lot of props need to go to Lee Van Cleef as he is absolutely chilling in his role.

This new edition really does the film the justice it deserves. The film has been restored to the director’s original vision as much as possible, giving you an extra 18 minutes. You will notice the added scenes as the voices have been re-dubbed (the first time you will notice this will throw you, as I think that specific part has the worst re-dubbing, but the other added scenes are done a lot better, even if you still notice it). The picture looks incredible and the sound is great. Extras included are commentary from Richard Schickel, a couple of documentaries and featurettes, poster gallery, deleted scenes and the original theatrical trailer. Along with the nice packaging, you get an 8-page booklet that includes pictures from the film along with Roger Ebert’s most recent review of the film. And, you get some mini-posters included inside the packaging as well. A superior edition of the movie, without question.

“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” is a pure triumph in filmmaking and should be seen by everybody at least once. Don’t let the fact that this is a Western throw you. I think this can be enjoyed by everybody, and even by those who are not big fans of Westerns. A film filled with authentic emotion and action, this is one that shouldn’t be missed by anyone. I LOVE this movie, and I cannot express that enough. -Michael Crane

Imagine you combined a few of the best parts of Something about Mary, 40 days and 40 nights, Sideways and ( as strange as it might sound) an after school special. Now, throw in more profanity than really necessary and imagine that the combination worked.

Plus, unlike the Josh Hartnett film, 40 days and 40 nights, there is some actual thought given to the kind of person who is shown.

It’s not Shakespeare. It’s not Once Upon a Time In Mexico. And it’s not the Usual Suspects, but for what it is it works.

And what it is, is the smartest dumb movie I’ve seen in a very long time.

Among its many surprises, is you have a peer group of men who actually look out for each other.

You also have an attractive grandmother who is not the standard cookie-cutter grandmother.

These are just two of the many departures from the expected that make this anything but the one-note comedy that the commercials make it seem like.

The 40 year-old is cut from the same cloth as Steve Martin’s early masterpiece, the Jerk, and as someone in his thirties, it’s refreshing to see a funny movie, where the main character is not a 20-something.

Plus, the soundtrack is a surprising combination of some of the forgotten treasures of pop and broadway.

Perhaps, the best of all, it’s nice to be reminded that everyone is running on their own schedule in life.

My first viewing of “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” was late in its theatrical run. By then it had been banished to the smallest theater in the multiplex, so me and (I assume) the only other middle-aged virgin in town were its sole audience. I wish I’d seen it sooner, because it’s now one of my all-time favorite comedies.

Forty-year-old Andy Stitzer lives a comfortably regimented singleton life - similar to the main character from “About a Boy,” except chaste, uncool, and with no internal monologue. He works in the service department of Smart Tech, a Circuit City-like electronics store. One day, a couple of coworkers ask him to be the fifth man at a poker party. He accepts, but during the game is outed as a virgin. The rest of the movie revolves around his friends’ outrageous attempts to get him hooked up, along with Andy’s determined efforts to overcome his fear of women and woo Trish, an attractive customer who owns an online auction store the street.

This could easily have been another lowbrow copulation comedy. However, it’s much better than that. Steve Carell (also a co-writer) does a fine job of making Andy into a sympathetic character. Indeed, I easily identified with his motivations and actions: the bad experiences that led him to forsake dating, his escape into fantasy, and even the mundane activities he uses to fill his solitary life. Andy’s friends are also intriguing because they represent flawed approaches to women. David (Paul Rudd) is obsessed with a gal who dumped him years ago, Cal (Seth Rogan) objectifies females, and the serial cheater Jay (Romany Malco) can’t commit to his longsuffering girlfriend.

The movie has been lengthened in this DVD edition by 17 minutes with additional and extended scenes. As for DVD extras, this edition is packed with a decent assortment. Deleted scenes like Andy’s public karaoke debut added depth to the characters. A series of outtakes include the usual blown lines, gaffes, and laughing fits. The lively commentary contains interesting bits of trivia on the filmmaking process. However, it was a bit too crowded for my taste (just about everybody shows up), and Seth Rogan has a tendency to dominate the proceedings. Unfortunately, Catherine Keener is a glaring absence. Her portrayal of Trish is excellent, and I really wanted to hear her perspective. Finally, the other featurettes, such as the waxing scene “making-of” bit, are stock, but passable.

Although it’s somewhat raunchy, as a Christian I have to commend “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” for a single crucial thing: it’s the only mainstream movie I know of that makes chastity until marriage look like a grand idea. That alone is enough to recommend it (even if my pastor disagrees). But the humor, story, characters, and performances are also worth the watch - especially if someday, like me, you hope to sing “Age of Aquarius” on your honeymoon.

To have these three classics for this low price is fantastic. One film is the 1938 version of the classic Christmas Carol this one starring Reginald Owen as a very respectable Scrooge. If you can refrain from comparing him to Alastair Sim, you will be better able to enjoy another interpretation of Scrooge, and it is a fine one. Owen is truly miserly and wretched, as befits Scrooge, and very believable. The overall production is wonderful, the only drawback was the casting of Terry Kilburn as Tiny Tim…WAY over the top, to the point where he is annoying. But all in all, a great version, and Ann Rutherford as the Ghost of Christmas Past is fascinating.

Christmas in Connecticut is very satisfying; a real new England Christmas, with Barbara Stanwyck in one of her lighter roles. This is enjoyable for those who are alone over the Holidays and a great film to watch with family for those who will have a traditional Holiday, with family and friends.

I saved the best for last…Boys Town.

This is absolutely one of my all-time favorites, with Mickey Rooney in one of his definitve, cocky wise-guy roles. No one could touch a Mickey Rooney performance in this type of role; he cornered the brash market…as he proves in this movie. It is a real treat to watch him interact with Spencer Tracy, THE finest actor Hollywood has ever produced, IMO. He has dignity, he commands respect simply by virtue of his own quiet, firm presence.

The other boys were great complements to the production; all very natural, and Bobs Watson particularly heart-breaking in his role; what a great actor he was! (If you can find a copy, see him with Cedric Hardwicke and Lionel Barrymore in “On Borrowed Time”, a REAL tear-jerker.)

I wish I could have been on the set of this one! They must have had a ball. When I saw it, as a child, I thought it was a movie, therefore fantasy, and not real; when I found out that Father Flanagan was indeed real, as was Boys Town, it gave the movie even more of a dimension and interest. His tenet, “There is no such thing as a bad boy”, is touching in its simplicity and pure, simple faith. Father Flanagan’s secret for success with even the most recalcitrant youth was this faith and his refusal to accept any boy’s lack of self-esteem or belief in himself; with FF ALL things were possible.

When Spencer Tracy was voted best Actor at the Academy Awards that year, he became the first actor to win the award two years in a row…the first was for his part as Manuel, in “Captains Courageous.” Being the gracious, wonderful man he was, he accepted his award with extreme humility, and gave it to Father Flanagan, whom he highlighted in his acceptance speech.

This movie has drama, excitement and some very funny moments and shows the amazing versatility of a very young Mickey Rooney. A truly great buy.

The Classic Holiday Collection is a great one - “Boys Town,” “A Christmas Carol,” and, especially, the excellent “Christmas In Connecticut” are all movies that you can enjoy year after year.

I just wish they had also included “The Man Who Came To Dinner” (Bette Davis, Monty Wooley, Ann Sheridan) and “Holiday Affair” (Janet Leigh, Robert Mitchum), two other beloved holiday films that Warners owns. Throw in the great “Love Finds Andy Hardy,” which has a holiday setting and is already out on DVD, and maybe a disc of Christmas cartoons, and Warners could issue a second holiday collection. (Please do!)

“Christmas In Connecticut” has been a favorite holiday movie of mine since the early `80s, when I caught it by chance for the first time on a local station while relaxing during a holiday visit to my parents’ house. Although my mom, brother, and I hadn’t really planned to watch a whole movie right then, we all stayed with this great movie until the end, and really enjoyed it. The wry humor, the great actors (Barbara Stanwyck, Sydney Greenstreet, S.Z. Sakall, Dennis Morgan, Reginald Gardner, Una O’Connor), and the warm country setting make it a movie you’ll want to see over and over. Since that first viewing almost 25 years ago, I probably haven’t missed seeing it during the holiday season. I’ve been waiting for this to appear on DVD, and am glad it’s finally here!

“Boys Town” stars two of the greatest actors of the golden era of Hollywood, Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy, and their parts in this movie are among their best roles. “Boys Town” doesn’t have quite as close a connection to Christmas as the other two titles in this collection (there’s one scene set on the holiday), but this true story of a priest who builds a boarding school for troubled youth is one that will warm your heart. Tracy plays Father Flanagan, a kind, socially conscious priest who can be tough when he needs to be, and Mickey Rooney displays his wide-ranging acting talent (from tough talk to tears) as one of the neglected boys whom Flanagan sets on the right path.

The 1938 version of “A Christmas Carol” is full of colorful renderings (even though it’s in black-and-white) of very familiar Dickens characters, Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, and Tiny Tim among them. Reginald Owen does a good job as Scrooge - showing both his stingy ill-humor and his awakening as a human being — although one wonders how much better the movie might have been if Lionel Barrymore had reprised his regular radio role as Scrooge here. (This was apparently the original intention of MGM, but Barrymore had health problems that prevented this participation. And he eventually played his own version of Scrooge in “It’s a Wonderful Life,” of course.) Well-known character actor Gene Lockhart is a bit more portly as Bob Cratchit than I had imagined that character, but he does his usual great job of portraying the downtrodden Cratchit who maintains a good humor while enduring Scrooge’s abuse. Lockhart’s real-life wife and kids, including young June Lockhart, are featured as other members of the Cratchit family, with the exception of Tiny Tim, who is played by Terry Kilburn. Kilburn is a bit too cute for my taste, but I have to admit that Dickens seems to have intended Tim to be cute. Ann Rutherford, often seen as Andy Hardy’s girlfriend Polly Benedict, does a fine job as the ghost of Christmas past (although the blonde hair gives her a very different look). Others have pointed out that MGM cut and changed the story a good bit, but if you can overlook that, this is a nice, brisk telling of a great tale.

The extras on these discs are outstanding, although perhaps not as numerous as those for some modern movies. All include the movie trailers; the “Christmas Carol” trailer is especially interesting, because Lionel Barrymore appears to tout his friend Reginald Owen as Scrooge, apparently to help audiences get over their disappointment that Barrymore himself wasn’t playing the role himself after appearing in it famously on radio.

The “Christmas In Connecticut” disc includes the outstanding Oscar-winning short film “Star In The Night,” which brings the Nativity story to a 1940s diner/motel in the desert. Within a compelling re-telling of that old story, this film helps the viewer understand how the spirit of Christmas applies in the modern era - easily one of the best short films I’ve ever seen.

The “Christmas Carol” disc includes “Jackie Cooper’s Christmas Party,” in which the child star (”The Champ,” “Treasure Island”) hosts a party for his friends on an MGM soundstage, with Clark Gable, Marie Dressler, Wallace Beery, and other stars serving dinner for the kids. (Look for a very amusing Santa Claus played by - well, I won’t ruin the surprise.) The disc also has a short film of young Judy Garland singing “Silent Night” with a choir, and the Oscar-nominated cartoon “Peace on Earth” (1939), which laments man’s self-destructive warring instinct (and which was remade in the 50s as “Good Will To Men” - both with a message that’s still directly relevant).

“Boys Town” is accompanied by its own less-famous sequel, “Men Of Boys Town,” so you’re getting two features on one disc. You also get a featurette about the real Boys Town (which still exists and has expanded beyond its original Nebraska location), as well as a 1939 radio program promoting the movie with Tracy and Rooney.

The Classic Holiday Collection, as its name suggests, is one that will please anyone who loves classic movies or the holiday season. To follow up on this Christmas gift to us, Warners should put out a second volume with some of its other holiday classics!

If you own the NFL Films Superbowl I-III collection, you don’t need to buy this item. I was disappointed. I thought it would have been produced by the Dallas Cowboys NOT NFL Films. I thought it would have included a recap of each of the Cowboys’ seasons and then the Superbowl highlights. It does show all the 5 Superbowl highlight films produced by NFL Films but not a recap of each Cowboy season, only a recap of the NFL for each of those years. It is nice though to have all 5 Superbowl highlight films in one package. IF you dont already own the superbowl collection produced by NFL Films for all 30 superbowls, this is a great collection to own if your a Cowboy fan like myself.

If you are a Dallas Cowboys Fan,this is the best of the best. The ’90’s were an exciting time for Cowboy fans and this video is a review of the best Super Bowls ever played.

A word that can describe the Centennial Collection release of the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, the classic romantic comedy starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard.

Having reviewed previous versions of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” before on DVD, I’m sure many Audrey Hepburn fans are probably wondering how else can Paramount improve from the 2006 45th Anniversary Edition on DVD? Well, I can tell you right now… plenty! Please read on.

A film that stars quite a bit of talent, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” remains not just one of the most memorable romantic films of all time but a film that exemplifies the beauty of Audrey Hepburn, the chic style of the times and more (which I will discuss more in the special features portion of my review).

VIDEO & AUDIO:

The film is presented in widescreen format, enhanced for 16:9 TV’s. A lot of the Centennial Collection releases have been remastered for high definition and having the previous DVD’s, I can tell you that the DVD looks great. But I can only imagine how this film would look in 1080P if released in Blu-ray.

Audio is featured in Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround/English, Restored Mono, French Mono and Spanish Mono. The film of course is dialogue-driven but sure enough, the music of Harry Mancini is alive and well when blaring through your speakers.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

As mentioned before, there have been several releases of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” prior to this Centennial Collection, the older DVD’s really hardly came with anything but the trailer until the 2006 “Special 45th Anniversary Collector’s Edition” which came with a good number of special features and a commentary by producer Richard Shepherd.

Well, what I can tell you is that the Centennial Collection contains all of the special features from the Anniversary DVD release but also adds quite a few new lengthy featurettes as well. On the first disc, the first disc contains the movie and the same commentary from the Anniversary disc by Producer Richard Shepherd. You can tell that Shepherd gets drawn in to the film and doesn’t speak in the commentary until he feels necessary.

So, for those wanting a verbose commentary, Shepherd doesn’t do that. But it’s actually quite fine because when he does speak, you learn a lot of things from him about the filming. For example, the opening shot featuring Audrey Hepburn in front of Tiffany’s in Fifth Avenue. Where the place is typically packed with cars and people, for that time… there was hardly any traffic and no people. So, a very lucky time in filmmaking for the crew.

Also, Shepherd is quite apologetic about casting Rooney as Mr. Funiyoshi and he does that quite a bit in the commentary. You realized he didn’t want the yellow face routine (Caucasian actor looking like an Asian stereotypical character) but it was kept in. Also, commenting of how certain scenes worked then but would never fly now. But most of all, his continued feeling of Audrey Hepburn as a class act. Overall, a very good commentary that you learn a lot from.

The special features on disc 2 are as follows:

* A Golightly Gathering - A 20-minute featurette that reunites the talents who were in the cocktail party scene from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. One of the coolest parties ever on film, it’s great to see the talent from the film reunite and discuss their experiences of filming that part scene 40-years later. I had no idea the party-scene took 8-days to film but it was great to hear everyone talk about their scene, working with Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard and Blake Edwards. But what a great featurette and so happy of it’s inclusion.

* Henry Mancini: More Than Music - This nearly 21-minute featurette is a wonderful featurette that features interviews with Henry Mancini’s wife, daughter and son. Seeing private photos and even videos of Henry and having their family talk about him and what they remember about him, winning the two Academy Awards for “Moon River” and working on other films is just wonderful.

* Mr. Yunioshi: An Asian Perspective - A 17-minute featurette. Despite the popularity of the film, the black cloud that has lingered on this film was the casting of Mickey Rooney as “Mr. Yunioshi”. A talented actor, the “yellow face” role was just wrong and acknowledge by the director, producer and a cast member was just terribly wrong in casting Rooney for that role. This feature has interviews with representatives of the Media Action Network of Asian Americans. I’m glad that Paramount did include this featurette on this collection.

* The Making of a Classic - Originally from the Anniversary release, this segment features interviews with Producer Richard Shepherd and Director Blake Edwards. A 16-minute featurette and you definitely learn a lot about the film, especially from Blake Edwards. One could image how his director’s commentary would have been if included, especially with what he had to say on this featurette.

* It’s So Audrey: A Style Icon - An eight minute featurette with interviews with designers, Hepburn’s son and companion. How Audrey Hepburn made simple things quite sexy. How Audrey never thought of her body proportions that sexy but she did have a good eye for style and how she became a fashion and style icon.

* Behind the Gates: The Tour - This 4 minute featurette gives people a look behind the gates of the Paramount lot. A good promotional for those who would like to tour the Paramount lot.

* Brilliance in a Blue Box - A six minute featurette about the history of Tiffany’s. Originally featured on the Anniversary DVD.

* Audrey’s Letter to Tiffany - A two minute featurette about the letter Audrey wrote for the preface of the 150th Anniversary book for Tiffany’s.

* Original Theatrical Trailer - The original two minute trailer with its dust, scratches and all.

* Galleries - Featuring production stills, movie stills and publicity shots for the film.

The Centennial Collection also comes with a booklet that features information of facts of the film, from how Capote wanted Marilyn Monroe for this film, information on Orangey the cat and how the “New York Site” that was filmed at the Paramount lot is now forever lost due to the big Paramount fire back in 1983 that destroyed historical sets.

And the DVD is just classy with it’s black and gold packaging (which most of the Centennial Collection are packaged) and ditching the pink and white packaging.

I absolutely love this film. From the memorable dialogue, that first scene with Holly standing in front of Tiffany’s, the cocktail party, Holly Golightly singing “Moon River” on her guitar, the cat and of course the final scene between Holly and Paul.

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a classic Audrey Hepburn film that is a must-own. I know that the film has been re-released many times on DVD and the 45th Anniversary was just a pleasure when it first came out and at the time, it was a definitive release. But now, with this “Centennial Collection” featuring a remastered version of the film and the new (and quite lengthy) featurettes that is included on this collection, this is the definitive version on DVD.

Personally, I can only imagine how this would look once it becomes available on Blu-ray but for now, these Centennial Collections from Paramount are just wonderful. Especially “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, I’m really amazed how far Paramount went in order to make this release much more special.

The addition of “A Golightly Gathering” featuring the actors who took part in that cocktail party was awesome, the Henry Mancini featurette for those who just love his musical work will love this featurette and of course, for those who have felt the pain of the “yellow face” segment in the film, Paramount going the extra step by including a featurette dedicate to that on this DVD.

But in the end, this DVD is indeed a special tribute to Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn is just an icon of style and elegance and this DVD does a great job of giving special attention to such an incredible film. And after seeing this film so many time times, I still have not grown tired of it. It’s one special film that I highly recommend

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is flawless blend of a crowd-pleasing star-vehicle for the effortlessly charming Audrey Hepburn and a bittersweet, painfully beautiful look at love, life, and happiness. Director Blake Edwards, the man behind “The Pink Panther” series, “The Party”, “Operation Petticoat”, “Victor/Victoria”, etc., has crafted a truly timeless film based on the novella by Truman Capote. Though numerous elements of Capote’s story were altered, the film still has a strong core and message that urges audiences to examine their own lives, loves, and happiness.

Everything about this film is classic. You have the timeless Hepburn and her defining performance as Holly Golightly, a sophisticated, sassy call-girl with a secret past who is ultimately one of the most vulnerable characters Hepburn ever played. Then there’s George Peppard, a vastly under-appreciated actor who manages to hold his own next to Hepburn while playing a struggling writer living off an older married woman. Peppard’s boyish good looks and surprising depth make him the ideal match for Hepburn’s Golightly.

Then of course there’s Henry Mancini’s wistfully romantic score and the tremendously popular theme-song, “Moon River”, a true gem of a song that capture’s the film’s essence perfectly. In addition, you have Hepburn’s fabulous, style-setting wardrobe courtesy of her lifelong friend Hubert de Givenchy. In this one film alone, Hepburn and Givenchy practically invented the “little black dress”, popularized ballet flats, and introduced capris as a stylish alternative to regular pants.

Paul Varjak: The mean reds, you mean like the blues?

Holly Golightly: No. The blues are because you’re getting fat and maybe it’s been raining too long, you’re just sad that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?

Paul Varjak: Sure.

Holly Golightly: Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab and go to Tiffany’s. Calms me down right away.

These two opposites could hardly be more different, until the day that Higgins admits he’s “grown accustomed to her face”…

With a star-studded supporting cast (Wilfred Hyde-White, Jeremy Brett, Gladys Cooper and Stanley Holloway chief among them) and the soaring score of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, MY FAIR LADY is the glittering jewel which capped off the era of the great Hollywood musicals. Despite a huge critical backlash (concerning Julie Andrews not cementing her most acclaimed stage role on film), Audrey Hepburn gives a spirited performance as feisty Eliza. She worked hard to get her limited singing voice into the necessary shape to meet the demands of the score, yet at the 11th hour was replaced by noted Hollywood “ghost singer” Marni Nixon. Rex Harrison, having starred in both the Broadway and London productions of the show, was confident enough in his performance to sing his songs live (via a hidden microphone). Stanley Holloway–another veteran of the stage show–also triumphantly reprises his role for the screen.

Warner’s previous double-disc Special Edition release (using the 1997 restored print of the film) was quite definitive. I can’t imagine how Paramount is going to top that release–unless they perform a new remaster of the 1997 print. Still, MY FAIR LADY is one of those movies which deserves to always be in circulation, constantly enjoyed and discovered by new audiences. I can only hope a shiny new Blu-ray release is just around the corner…

Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) who specializes in the English language makes a bet with Colonel Hugh Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White) that he can take someone who speaks with a lower-class language and by correcting the speech can pass off as upper-class or royalty. Overhearing this bet is a flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn); she wants to work a flower stand. But they will not take her unless she can speak more “genteel”. Professor Higgins takes up the challenge.

This is a musical version of the movie Pygmalion (1938), based on a play by George Bernard Shaw.

As people find that music and movies bring memories of the time in which they heard or viewed it. His movie has a meaning to me as I too was in love and found myself singing “On the street where you live.” One of the strengths of the movie is that many of the songs instead of being classical and just stuffed into at odd times actually are songs that you would initiate in your life and they did so in the lives of the characters in the movie.

This is one of the few films that were just waiting for Blu-ray to be perfected.
